The "twin cities" of Oberhausen in Germany and
Carbonia and Iglesias on the italian island of Sardinia
are places with a strong mining tradition. The province
of Carbonia-Iglesias was an important coal mining region.
Many people from this area emigrated to the Ruhr Valley of Germany to work in the coal mines there.
Like the Ruhr region, Sardinia also suffered from the
mining crisis and is now undergoing a period of
structural change. Due to the similarities between
the province of Carbonia-Iglesias and the city of
Oberhausen, as well as the connections shared as a
result of migration (The Sardinian community in Oberhausen), the in the Bosom of the earth projct was developed as part of the "RUHR 2010" cultural program
commemorating the Ruhr megalopolis status as
"European Capital of Culture". The project aimed to initiate
a fruitful and long-term exchange of thoughts, views
and experience between the two regions - seemingly
distant and yet so closely related - through the media
of music, photography, film, video art and literature.
